Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to question certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
