Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
