RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
